Week 4, Assignment #1 From reading about RTI and watching the videos provided, I understand that RTI is a program to intervene for struggling students in any subject area which can be divided into three levels. The first level is core or universal outcomes and teaching/caregiving strategies. This refers to the regular differentiated instruction given in class (90 minutes) by the teacher/caregiver which every students receives and it meets the needs of 80-85% of all students. If a student is having trouble keeping up, then they receive more targeted/supplement instruction for 30 minutes which is geared more for their needs. This usually helps the 15% of students that need a little bit of extra supplementation to catch up to the first level. Instruction is given in small groups of students in a regular education classroom. If educators still feel that a student is falling behind, usually only about 5% of students, then they move up to the third level of instruction which is highly i...

Week 3, Assignment #3 1. The QRI5 is an individually administered informal reading inventory (IRI) designed to provide information about (1) conditions under which students can identify words and comprehend text successfully and (2) conditions that appear to result in unsuccessful word identification or comprehension. 2. The purpose of the QRI5 is to know at what level a student is standing by in reading which gives the teacher a better idea of how to group students for guided reading, choosing the appropriate books for literacy circles, reading workshops, and independent reading, and it can provide information for designing and evaluating intervention instruction. 3. I am new to official reading assessments, so the only other official assessment that I have seem close enough to the QRI5 is the Running Record we learned about in Dr. Hsu’s class. The running r...

Week 3, Assignment #2 A form of assessment that can be used to measure students’ learning outcomes are rubrics. The teacher can create a rubric including descriptions and point levels for the different aspects of the project being addressed like quality and credibility of the information, the presentation of the project, and communication and collaboration for example. The students use this rubric to guide them on the expectations of the teacher for the project. Rubrics are a great way to formally assess students’ learning outcomes. If a teacher wants do to an informal assessment they can openly ask students to talk about/explain/describe their project or the teacher can float around the classroom watching students working on their projects. A very basic way of addressing the common core learning standards when there are students of various grade levels is project group placement. This means that when the teacher assigns the project to the class, he/she should not have the stud...

Week 2 Assignment #3 I really like the way these video clips and readings broke down reading into different aspects of reading. If I am teaching children how to read, it is so much easier to figure out what a students is struggling with when reading is broken up into different parts than to just noticing that a student is having a “reading problem.” This information helped me understand that is a students read words correctly for example, but lacks expression they probably have a fluency issue, or if a student cannot answer questions about what they read then they have trouble with comprehension, or if they get confused between similar words than they may have a hard time with understanding sounds of speech and so forth. When these specific reading issues are identified the child can be helped much more efficiently addressing their specific need more accurately.

Week 1: Self-Intro View my Voki here: http://tinyurl.com/yacdj6vk Hi, my name is Shaindy Schwartz. I grew up in Brooklyn, New York and I am currently living in Jerusalem, Israel with my husband and baby. If I were to write a book about myself, I would call it, “Shaindy: Past, Present, and Future,” because I would tell you about my past, where I am and what I am doing now, and future goals/plans I have. I like corny jokes, that being said a man walked into a bar, ouch! As of now, I am not teaching or working because I consider being a wife, mom, and college student to be a full time job. I taught fifth grade (for only three months because then I got married and moved out of Brooklyn) in a Jewish religious all girl school in Brooklyn. I taught math, science, history, literature, spelling, and vocabulary. I am not sure what the Teacher Education or MSIT program is referring to. True, it was not that much experience, but I feel that first me being more educated in the field will ...
