Week 9, Assignment #3
Summary of QRI-5 and DIBELS

·         QRI-5- The Qualitative Reading Inventory 5 is an assessment tool to assess students’ reading level. The teacher gives a list of words two grade levels lower than the students’ current grade level and the students reads the words until it is at his/her instructional reading level. In this way the teacher figures out the students reading level.

·         DIBELS- the Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills (DIBELS) is an assessment tool in which the teacher administers to a student. It assesses different aspects of reading such as phonemic awareness, alphabetic principle, accuracy and fluency with connected text, reading comprehension, and vocabulary. A teacher can pinpoint a specific area in which a student is struggling with in reading.

Similarities and differences

·         Similarities- both assess students’ reading using a standardized assessment measure and are usually given individually.

·         Differences- QRT-5 tests for students’ fluency in reading in general according to the students’ grade level, while DIBELS assesses many different aspects of reading of students. In addition, DIBELS is an assessment tool for grades k-6, while the QRT-5 can be used through grade 12.

How they can be used

·         Both, the QRT-5 and DIBELS can be used to assess students reading level regularly to make sure students are up to par or they can be administered to students’ who are experiencing difficulty in reading. Both assessment tools give the teacher a clear picture of at what level or in what area the student needs reading intervention that will bring them up to the level which they should be at. The teacher can prepare more targeted lessons when they know what the students’ needs are.

  2. "the teacher can prepare more targeted lessons when they know what the students needs are"
That is such a great point! How are teachers supposed to know what to focus on at all if they do not even know where their studnets are holding??
