Week 7, Assignment #5

After assessing a student in these four areas, print awareness, phonological and phonemic awareness, phonics, and fluency, these are the results I found:

Print Awareness- the student grasped the concept of print awareness easily. I was watching her eyes and was able to see that she always read from left to right and from top to bottom. She fully understood that lines in the form of letters are meaningful.

Phonological and phonemic awareness- again the students seemed to have understood the concept well. She was able to sound out the syllables of a word and most of the time when prompted answered the correct amount of syllables per word. The student recognized rhyme and even came up with rhyming words on her own!

Phonics- the student was able to say letter sounds very well and was able to connect the beginning sound of one word with other words with the same beginning sound. She had no problem understanding that certain sounds do not correspond to the letters, for example “ph” has a “f” sound, but she expressed that she had difficulty in spelling such words.

Fluency- The student did struggle somewhat in reading fluently, it seems like she was so busy decoding the words that she was unable to focus on meaning.

Overall, the students performed well except for fluency. Therefore I would recommend more practice in reading. The following websites would be read for the student to use as reading practice. I believe that practice makes perfect, and with more reading practice, the student’s fluency will greatly improve.
